About the Curriculum

Believe, Achieve, Together We Succeed

About the Curriculum at Hagley Primary School

At Hagley Primary School, we believe that outstanding education is a result of a love for learning.  We aim to make learning meaningful, relevant, engaging and memorable.  We want our children to be inquisitive and enjoy their education whilst developing a desire for lifelong learning. We follow the National Curriculum in order to deliver broad, balanced and varied topics which also promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. We believe that all children can and will achieve and have access to learn about their place in the wider world through a range of contexts. We promote curiosity and the belief that the children are challenged to be out of their comfort zone and therefore become more well-rounded individuals with an appreciation of their own talents.

At Hagley Primary we have a bespoke and evolving curriculum that has been written to best meet the needs of our children and is reviewed by our staff on a regular basis.  Our topics are based around a broad theme which enables the children to make connections in their learning across the foundation subjects whilst also giving flexibility in the content, based on the children’s interests. These broad themes and ideas also enable us to make connections across the whole curriculum, including the ability to use and apply skills in Maths and English. Underpinning the topic titles are key concepts. These are big ideas which the children can relate to their learning and also provide opportunities for more indepth ‘big questions’ such as: ‘does peace always make progress?’

The use of key concepts and our curriculum as a progression model allows ideas and concepts to be reintroduced and reinforced across a range of contexts. This enables the children to both build and develop their schema ensuring that learning is embedded into long term memory. Regular retrieval and discussion further supports the development of the children’s schema around a topic or idea.

Additionally, our assemblies are mapped out througout the year to promote diversity, British Values, mental and emotional health and the key concepts we have identified which run throughout our curriculum. These are delivered within a child’s phase to ensure that age appropriate content is discussed in the most appropriate way.

Throughout our topics, the children will have the chance to experience a range of activities, including drama, speaking and listening, presentations, IT, research and debate as well as developing their knowledge and skills within the core and foundation subject areas. Educational visits, outside speakers and specialist workshops occur to compliment the curriculum and learning of our children and help them to develop their skills and understanding in a different context.

As a school, we take great pride in developing the children’s wider skills and talents across the curriculum. In KS2, the children are given the opportunity to learn skills in French, Computing and Music with a teacher dedicated to the delivery of the subject. In Computing and Music, this builds on the foundational knowledge and understanding developed during KS1.

Effective Teaching Within the Curriculum

The staff at Hagley Primary School plan and deliver sequences of learning which we believe will provide a rounded education for each individual child.  We aim for the children to be happy, confident and well-motivated whilst also developing their ability to be independent, caring and responsible. We hold high expectations for them and give equal opportunities to all children in order to help them achieve their full potential both academically and socially.  We believe that high quality appropriate teaching and learning experiences inspire children to learn and equip them with skills for the future.

Teaching at Hagley Primary School is ‘child centred’, meaning that each element of whole school and classroom practice is designed with an understanding of how our children will learn best at the centre of it.   We believe that by embedding the strategies below into our teaching and the curriculum, the children will be able to develop their knowledge and skills and apply it across a range of situations.

Principles of Effective Teaching and Learning

  • Learning activities are well planned using progression grids in each subject. This ensures progression through key stages and phases and that learning is built upon.
  • The needs of all individuals are met through effective stretch, challenge and support.
  • Teaching and learning activities enthuse, motivate and engage our children, whilst fostering within them a sense of curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
  • Teaching and learning is planned with an understanding of how children learn. We ensure that cognitive load is reduced and that children have the opportunity to regularly rehearse and to practise in order to embed knowledge and skills into long term memory.
  • Learning environments are well organised and have a purposeful atmosphere and children feel safe.
  • Links between ideas and topics are discussed to ensure that knowledge and skills are retained.
  • Regular assessment provides responsive teaching and feedback, ensuring that all children fulfil and progress to their potential.
  • Children have the opportunity to work independently and in groups, including children of different ages.
  • There are strong links between home and school and the importance of parental involvement in their children’s learning is recognised, valued and developed.

In addition, we are proud of our research informed practice and regular CPD ensures that as a school we apply the scientific principles of learning to our teaching. Retrieval practice, an understanding of Cognitive Load Theory and the importance of papers such as ‘Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction’ have helped to underpin our philosophy for the way we teach and also reflect on our teaching within school over the last few years.
