Year 1 Curriculum
During the first half term, we will focus on developing the children’s confidence to write using their phonics knowledge and increasing accuracy of high frequency words (red words). We will be developing the children’s understanding of what sentences are and their ideas will be recorded in correctly punctuated sentences. We will start to introduce the children to some of the fundamental grammar terms such as nouns and verbs and where these are within sentences. There will be a big emphasis on the presentation of their work as well as the opportunity to recap letter formation. We will have the opportunity to cover a wide variety of books and authors throughout this term, including the opportunity to share and rehearse poems. When writing, the children will be encouraged to say a sentence before they write it to ensure that it makes sense to them. In reading lessons, we will start to look carefully at texts to help us find the answers to simple questions. This term we will focus on predictions and sequencing a story.
Phonics is an important part of the timetable in Year 1. Whilst the children will be in groups for phonics, we will also provide many opportunites throughout the week to continue to practise our phonics skills.

The children will participate in a range of practical activities and games which will develop their confidence to:
- Count reliably at least 20 objects
- Compare and order numbers
- Identify one more and one less than a number
- Read and write numbers 0 to 20
- Relate addition to counting on, adding more and adding together
- Relate subtraction to taking away
- Problem solve and investigate
- Recall pairs of numbers that total 10
- Identify fact famiilies for numbers
- Use resources such as number lines, number tracks and physical resources (like Numicon) to develop our knowledge
- Develop our understanding of the Part-Whole model
- Name 2D and 3D shapes and manipulate them in different ways

The children will learn to label the parts of the body and the functions that some of these perform. We will also learn about the five senses and which body parts are associated with these.
Throughout the course of the year, we will look at weather and seasonal changes. Each term, we will focus on a different season and use the physical enviroment to explore the different signs of these seasons.
In the second half of the autumn term we will look at materials and make the distincttion between an object and what it is made from. We will identify the names of common materials and begin to describe their properites. This will allow us to compare and contrast different materials
We will also develop our investigation skills and will be encouraged to ask questions to further our understanding.
TOPIC AUTUMN – Knock, Knock, Who’s There?
Our whole topic in the autumn term is based around the book Knock, Knock, Who’s There? This is a book that we share and explore at the beginning of the year. The book lends itself to finding out about our local area, ourselves and where we live. In history we introduce the concept of a timeline and how the children have already changed over the course of their own lives. Sequencing is an important part of both our history and English learning this term. In geography we will begin to develop our map skills by finding out what a map is. We will then find out about where Hagley is in context of the four countries that make the United Kingdom.
Throughout th term, our art learning will focus on line, pattern and the exploration of different media, including collage, charocal and paper weaving.
Our DT learning will allow us to apply our knowledge of materials to build a freestanding house structure. During this we will design, make and evaluate what we have done.
Home learning will be shared via Seesaw on a Wednesday. Each week there will be one activity for your child to complete at home. It will either have a maths or English focus. Home learnng is to be completed by the following Wednesday and shared via Seesaw.
Children will bring home two banded reading books (matched to their reading level) and one library book each Friday. Please read with your child at home three times during the week and discuss the book along with any new vocabulary. Please share this reading via Seesaw (preferably in one post) and return books to school on a Wednesday.
Homework is set via an announcement on Seesaw each Wednesday to give details of the home learning for the week ahead. This will be a rotation of English, Maths and topic activities. We will signpost you to any resources, should you need them. When this work is completed, please upload one post containing your child’s reading and their home learning. This will need to be completed by the following Wednesday when Seesaw is checked by the class teachers.
It is important that the children regularly practise reading and writing these common exception words. These are words which often contain unusual sound/spelling correspondances
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
Please read with, and to your child regularly and let us know how they are getting on via Seesaw. To help monitor and view the children’s progress, it is important that they bring their reading book each day in case we ask them to read one of their ‘home books’
When wriitng at home, encourage children to use the phonics they have been taught in school to spell unfamilar words.
Click here to access the rhymes for letter formation which we use in school. This will help to support your child with any letters they are struggling to form. This could be practised on paper, with paint, sand etc!
Practise counting forwards and backwards to 20 with your child and encourage them to ‘make’ numbers using objects in the home.
Continue to practise the Year 1 common exception words (a copy of these can be found in the spellings section above)
Encourage your children to talk about what they have done at school and answer your questions.
Support your children with their homework which will be set on a Wednesday.
Can you please ensure your child wears the correct PE kit to school on a Monday (indoor) and a Friday (outdoor). Warm jumpers and joggers are recommended at this time of year for outdoor PE.
Refillable water bottles are great to keep your children focussed and hydrated throughout the day – please can you ensure your child has a water bottle in school with no squash or flavoured water.
