Year 3 Curriculum

Curriculum Evening Presentation

TOPIC

Our first topic of the year will be called ‘Land Before Time’. We will be looking back in History, from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age. We will explore chronology and use vocabulary such as BC and AD. We will look in depth at what life was like whilst comparing the time to our lives now. We will look at houses, religion, tools and much more. Our end goal will be to answer the enquiry question: ‘How did life change from the Stone Age to the Iron Age?’

ENGLISH

Autumn term 2

This half term, we will be exploring a selection of texts to support our writing. In Year 3, we aim to incorporate reading skills at the start of a new unit to support academic progress and promote a love for reading. Our first unit will focus on writing a narrative to entertain linked to our topic using the stimulus ‘Stone Age Boy’ written and illustrated by Satoshi Kitamura. We will explore key skills including inference, retrieval, expanded noun phrases and paragraphs. Our second unit focus is on writing a set of instructions using the text ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ written by Michelle Robinson. We will explore key skills such as fronted adverbials, time adverbials and writing in chronological order.

MATHS

Autumn term 2

HOME LEARNING

In order to minimise the amount of paperwork between school and home, we will be setting homework on Seesaw. Children will be able to check their Seesaw for information about:

1) Spellings to learn for the week     2) The MyMaths activity that has been set     3) The times table to focus on for the week

Children will also be able to use Seesaw as an online reading diary, recording what they have read throughout the week. Children are still expected to read 3 X a week and this will be monitored in school.

Banded reading books will be sent home for those children who are not free readers.

SEESAW

Please see below for the expectations/usage of Seesaw.

When using Seesaw, please only upload the following:

A record of reading (once per week, if possible, with three pieces of evidence).

SPELLINGS

There will be a weekly spelling programme during the term. For the first half of the term every child will be revisiting previously taught spelling patterns to consolidate their learning. During the second half of the term, we will complete five spelling sessions a week with the children. Taught spellings will alternate between Read Write Inc spelling units and the Year 3/4 words.

PE

Tuesdays – Indoor PE

Wednesdays – Outdoor PE

Children to come in to school wearing their PE kits on PE days.

For safety reasons, jewellery is not to be worn during PE lessons, therefore could you please ensure your child is able to remove it independently before the lesson or have it removed before coming into school.

SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING AT SCHOOL

  • Read with your child as much as possible as this helps with their fluency and understanding of texts as well as helping to increase their imagination for their own writing.  Please ensure your child fills out their reading record for each book they read.  We expect your child to read between 1 and 2 books from then school reading scheme per week.
  • Practise times tables.  Revise 2, 5 and 10 times table from Year 2.  By the end of Year 3, children are expected to know their times tables at speed and be able to rapidly recall the 3, 4, 8 and 11 times tables. In school, children practise times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars four times each week.
  • Encourage your children to play on the following educational websites:
